Drug abuse treatment

Helsinki Deaconess Institute offers advice and treatment to drug addicts of all ages and to their families and close friends. These services are available nationwide on a 24/7 basis.

Drug-abuse treatment work at the Deaconess Institute is done and developed at several units and in connection with diaconia projects. Our clients include both Finns and immigrants.

As a rule, admission to drug-abuse treatment is via Huumepäivystyspoliklinikka (Drug Addiction Clinic for Acute Care). The clinic's on-duty phone number is (09) 7750 500.

Professional help and information related to drugs and drug abuse. Call free of charge 0800 900 45. This service is available on 24/7 basis.

The clinic serves all drugs-addicts, their families, close friends, and public authorities on a 24/7 basis.Together with Elämä on Parasta Huumetta ry (EOPH ry, an NGO), the Helsinki Deaconess Institute offers a 24-hour help-line service for drug abusers and their families as well for professionals who encounter drug use through their work.

Detoxification Ward

The treatment administered enables termination of drug abuse in safe conditions, committing oneself to the addressing of drug problems, and continuation rehabilitation.The Helsinki Deaconess Institute's Detoxification Ward offers institutional detoxification care for drug users. The nature of the care is voluntary closed-ward care. The care period is 2 to 4 weeks, and further care is determined with an individual plan and is carried out either non-institutionally or in rehabilitating drug-abuser welfare institutes.

Replacement Treatment Community

Each clients participates in the formulation of an individual care plan, which is then carried out and assessed together. The duration of the care periods is individual and it is based on the care plan drawn up with the client.Helsinki Deaconess Institute’s Replacement Treatment Community provides rehabilitating replacement treatment for customers with opioid addictions in accordance with the decree of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health. The treatment programme consists of medical treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation with the emphasis on the minimization of adverse effects.

Drug-Rehabilitation Residential Unit for Families

This care form aims to support parenting free of substance-abuse and to secure the child's development.The Rehabilitation Residential Unit for Families provides both rehabilitating substance-abuse care and family care for families in which the parent or parents have a substance-abuse problem as well as care for pregnant substance abusers. In order to start the rehabilitation, a treatment-need assessment is required as well as possible detoxification treatment.

Drop-in Centre for HIV-Positive Persons

The threshold to this service is low. No referral is needed.The drop-in centre engages in preventive work to reduce the spreading of infectious diseases among IV drug users and also endeavours to improve and/or maintain the quality of life for drug users with an HIV infection.

Mobile Health Education Unit

The services are provided on the spot where it is supposed that drug-addicts congregate.The services of the mobile health education unit complement the existing health education services available for IV drug users. The aim is to establish contact with drug users in the field and to lower the threshold for them for seeking medical assistance, as well as to reduce the risk of blood-transmitted diseases among drug users and the rest of the population.

Temporary Accommodation for HIV-positive drug users

Services are available to customers seven days a week, with accommodation facilities open from 7 p.m. to 12 noon.

The Munkkiniemi Service Centre offers temporary accommodation for HIV-positive drug users. The facilities are on the third floor of the building and accommodate approximately 15 customers daily depending on circumstances.
