Maintenance Treatment UnitThe Helsinki Deaconess Institute’s Maintenance Treatment Unit provides rehabilitating replacement treatment for clients with opioid addictions as per the decree of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health The treatment consists of medical treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation. The replacement treatment at the Maintenance Treatment Unit is opioid-addiction rehabilitating treatment that aims at a substance-free life. The duration of the treatment has not been specified but it typically stretches over several years. During replacement treatment, the clients gradually come off by-substances and withdraw from the substance-abuse culture. Furthermore, during the treatment, the aim is to help clients to integrate into society, studies or work life. Some of the clients are eventually able to come off the replacement medication, some need it permanently. Two separate treatment models are used as part of the replacement-treatment psychosocial rehabilitation: the out-patient clinic has a therapeutic community that is adapted for non-institutional care, and some clients receive individual care. Care must be sought for through the HUS (the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa) substance psychiatry out-patient evaluation.
