The services of the mobile health education unit complement the existing health education services available for IV drug users. The aim is to establish contact with drug users in the field and to lower the threshold for them for seeking medical assistance, as well as to reduce the risk of blood-transmitted diseases among drug users and the rest of the population.

The mobile health education unit services include health education, an exchange programme for needles and syringes, HIV testing, inoculations, medical treatment (treatment of vasculitis, for example), and case management.

The service is available six nights a week between 4 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. with twelve stops in the Helsinki and Vantaa area. Two nurses are always on duty, so testing and inoculations services are always available when the unit is in the field.
