Drop-in Centre for HIV-Positive PersonsThe drop-in centre engages in preventive work to reduce the spreading of infectious diseases among IV drug users and also endeavours to improve and/or maintain the quality of life for drug users with an HIV infection. The drop-in centre offers HIV-positive drug users meals and an opportunity to maintain daily hygiene, to utilize various basic and specialized health care and social work services, and to participate in rehabilitation through the low threshold community treatment. The main idea behind the services offered in the drop-in centre is to minimize the adverse effects of drug use. The core expertise areas of the drop-in centre are working with marginalized persons, substance misuse services, prevention of infectious diseases, and mental health work. The unit’s skills also encompass security and operational environment issues. In providing the various services available, the drop-in centre staff use professional methods to create a customer-oriented approach while also making every effort to respect human dignity. The drop-in centre is located in Munkkisaarenkatu 16 and it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The drop-in centre offers risk users an opportunity to exchange their needles and syringes for clean ones mon-fri from 8-10.30 a.m. and 12-14.30 p.m. HIV testing daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The services are free of charge for the customers and provided in cooperation with the HUCH Infectious Diseases Unit and the City of Helsinki Social Services for the Homeless.
