International diaconia

International diaconia is service work based on a Christian love for one’s neighbour that brooks no boundaries. In practice it means working on behalf of and alongside individuals who are or who are in danger of being marginalized, abused, or poor in some way. It means working for human dignity and justice, thus creating the conditions for a meaningful existence. It means cooperation among people and across the various strata of society.

Ever since its inception, Christian diaconia has been an essential part of the activities, diaconic thinking and ethical conviction of the Deaconess Institute. International diaconia rejects all racial, religious, political, social, geographical, and gender- or age-related barriers as the basis of segregation. Mercy belongs to us all, no matter what our story or background.

For everyone, the right to be a human being!

International diaconia in development cooperation

The key areas in our development cooperation are South and East Africa, where our aim is regional and thematic centralization and the creation of long-term cooperational relationships. Development cooperation focuses on strengthening diaconia expertise and skills with the cooperating churches, and on the control of the HIV pandemia, not just as a health problem but also as a major social and developmental concern.

Initiatives for our development cooperation projects came from our partners. We carry out international diaconia work as a mutual learning process, creating new expertise both for our partners and for the Deaconess Institute.
