The UNIT service of the Deaconess Foundation has been promoting the well-being and inclusion of foreigners with criminal backgrounds since 2019.

The UNIT service is based on the Deaconess Foundation’s expertise in multicultural coaching, courteous encounters with people and a sense of solidarity with them. The UNIT service is designed for people who have a criminal background and do not have Finnish citizenship.

The service provides support:

  • for clients in difficult life situations
  • strengthens their ability to manage in society and
  • gives them the tools to lead a crime-free life
  • participation in the coaching is voluntary and free of charge.

The mentoring mainly takes place in Southern Finland. But we are happy to provide remote coaching and counselling throughout Finland.

In addition to one-on-one activity:

  • we work closely with our network
  • give advice on matters concerning foreigners and service guidance
  • train professionals in culture-sensitive issues.

We meet clients in prison, on supervised visits and at our office in Vallila, Helsinki. We would especially welcome guidance when it comes to the time of release from prison. All UNIT employees are security-cleared.

Examples of UNIT coaching:

  • Housing and personal finance
  • Rights concerning residence, deportation and return
  • Employment or study placement

In 2019-2022, the UNIT project worked in the Criminal Sanctions Region of Southern Finland to strengthen the everyday coping and inclusion of asylum seeker or immigrant prisoners released from prison. The UNIT service receives stable funding for its activities.
